A Dad Guide to Resort Hopping at Disney World
By The Trip Architect
Why Resort Hopping is My Favorite Disney Secret
I have spent many years walking around the parks with my kids. While I love the rides, sometimes the crowds get a little intense. That is when I head to the resorts. You do not need a park ticket to visit most of the hotels on Disney property. It is a fantastic way to soak up the magic without the cost of a daily pass. Plus, the air conditioning in the lobbies is top tier. My kids love looking at the details in the decor. I love that I do not have to dodge thousands of people to find a bathroom. Why is the Polynesian Resort so relaxed? Because it has aloha spirit. I know, that was a bad one. Sorry.
The Best Spots for Free Entertainment
If you want to feel like a pro, start at the Magic Kingdom area resorts. You can hop on the monorail for free. It is basically a ride itself. Kids love sitting up front if the driver lets them. Stop at the Grand Floridian to listen to the live pianist in the lobby. It feels very fancy, even if you are wearing flip flops and a mouse hat. When evening rolls around, head to the beach at the Polynesian Village Resort. You can watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the sand without the shoulder to shoulder squeeze. It is completely free. Bring a blanket and some snacks to save even more money. You can also catch the Electrical Water Pageant here around 9:00 PM. It is a classic Disney experience that most people skip. They are missing out on a glowing good time. See what I did there?
Dining on a Budget Without the Parks
Dining inside the parks gets expensive fast. I like to hunt for hidden gems at the resorts instead. For a quick lunch, the Contempo Cafe at the Contemporary Resort has great flatbreads for about $13. If you want something a bit more fun, head to Disney Springs. While not a hotel, it is free to enter and park. Grab a slice of pizza at Blaze for around $11 or share some chicken at Earl of Sandwich for $9. My favorite resort snack is the Tonga Toast at Kona Cafe. It is a bit of an investment at $19, but it is huge. Share it with a partner to keep costs down. If you want a cheaper treat, go to Beaches and Cream at the Beach Club. You can order a single scoop of ice cream for about $6. It hits the spot on a hot Florida afternoon.
How to Plan Your Perfect Resort Day
Transportation is the key to a successful resort hop. You can use the Disney buses, the monorail, or the Skyliner. The Skyliner is my favorite way to travel between Epcot area resorts. It is smooth, fast, and provides a great view of the rooftops. Keep in mind that some resorts require a dining reservation to park your car there. Always check the rules before you drive. If you are staying off property, park at Disney Springs and use the free bus system. It might take a little longer, but it saves you $30 on daily parking fees. Being a dad at Disney requires a lot of patience. My biggest piece of advice is to keep your schedule loose. Let the kids look at the fountains. Enjoy the slow pace of a resort day. It is a great way to recharge for your next park visit. Remember that you do not have to see everything in one day. Focus on one or two resorts per trip to keep everyone happy. And always carry a portable charger. You will need it to track your bus times on your phone.
